Is juvenile arthritis hereditary? causes and Treatment

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA):

It is a form of arthritis that occurs in children before 16 years of age. It can affect one or more joints of the child and cause inflammation and stiffness in the joints. JIA is an autoimmune disorder that affects the bone development of growing children, eye inflammations, and joints damage. Juvenile arthritis is not a hereditary problem because it can occur to people who don’t have any ancestors who suffered from it. But there are some types of JIA that run in families but the exact hierarchy of inheritance is not known.

Types of Juvenile Idiopathic arthritis:

There are 7 types of JIA based on symptoms and the number of joints affected. They are:

Systemic onset JIA: It occurs to one or many joints with fever and skin rashes.

Oligoarticular JIA: It occurs in 1 to 4 joints in the first 6 months. If it affects more joints after 6 months then it is called as extended Oligoarticular JIA. If it won’t spread to other joints after 6 months, it is called persistent Oligoarticular JIA.

Polyarticular JIA: It has 2 types based on the rheumatic factor (RF). They are RF negative Polyarticular JIA and RF positive Polyarticular JIA. They both can affect the 5 or more joints of the child.

Enthesitis JIA: it can affect other parts of the body other than joints. As the name suggests tenderness occurs along with arthritis inflammation the bone meets the ligament or other connecting tissues of the body.

Psoriatic arthritis: In this type, children have arthritis along with a skin disorder called psoriasis.

Undifferentiated arthritis: This is the classification of arthritis that can not fit in any other type mentioned above and fulfill the criteria of more than one type of arthritis.

Causes:

The exact causes of Juvenile arthritis are unknown but the following are the possible triggers for Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA)

  • Genetic factors: JIA is linked to part of a gene called HLA antigen DR4.the person who has this gene has more chances of getting JIA
  • Environmental factors like infection and other problems that influence immunity health
